Phabulous Philco
The Philadelphia Storage Battery Company (Philco) started out making batteries for electric cars in 1906, then batteries for radios. (The name "Philco" first appeared in in 1919.) In 1928 they introduced their own line of radios, which quickly became popular. By 1930, they were the top maker of radios. They also started making car radios in 1930 and later expanded into other areas including air conditioners (1938), refrigerators (1939), home freezers (1946), televisions (1947), electric ranges (1949) and home laundry washers & dryers (1954). In 1957, they made the wildly futuristic "Predicta" line of televisions (I so badly want one!) which were a poor seller then, but are now widely sought after. Philco introduced the first solid state computer in 1957. In 1961, Ford Motor bought Philco (making them Philco-Ford) and they made all their car radios. Ford sold Philco to GTE in 1974, and from there it changed hands a few more times. The name Philco still lives on in South America.
Philo Farnsworth, widely thought of as the father of modern Television, once worked for Philco.
